Start a Podcast

Is 2022 a good time to start a podcast?

According to Podcast Insights there are over 2M podcasts and 48 million episodes.  This may seem daunting but of that 2M only 850K are currently active. Active meaning creating regular episodes.

Maybe, 850K also sounds a bit daunting.  The truth is, building a podcast that has a large audience isn’t easy.  This isn’t meant to dissuade you or cause you anxiety.  What I’m trying to impart is for you to have clarity or purpose.

What do you want from your podcast?

There are no wrong answers but the answers will dictate actions.  Is this just an excuse to get together with friends? Do you want to be seen as an expert in your industry? Do you want to make money?  Is this a service project to build awareness or give back?

Deciding the why is the single most important decision you will make that affects the success of your show. You are building the guardrails to be able to define success and derive some joy from what amounts to a full-time job’s worth of work.

How many hours does it take to build a podcast?

All of them. This is a bit tongue and cheek but there are infinite things you can do on your podcast. I would reserve at least 20 hours per week for most indie podcasts. You will need to research, script, record, edit, post, promote and repeat. Every week (or whatever your schedule is).

What are the steps to building a podcast?

Luckily,  Tanner Cambell has already written about the basic steps to creating a podcast in 2022. Tanner covered everything from choosing a host and microphone to editing and publishing.
